President Tinubu Approves National Honours for 17 Slain Soldiers
President Bola Tinubu has approved a befitting burial and the conferment of posthumous national honours for 17 soldiers killed during a peacekeeping mission in Delta State.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, during a Ramadan fast-breaking event with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and other House leaders.
President Tinubu expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and emphasized that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
The soldiers were killed while responding to distress calls in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, where clashes between two communities were ongoing.
Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd.) revealed that the soldiers were ambushed by residents of the community.
The Nigerian Army denied any form of reprisal on the community and emphasized its commitment to apprehending the perpetrators.
The Defence Headquarters released the names of the slain soldiers and vowed to ensure that the culprits face consequences for their actions.
During the event, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for unity and support for President Tinubu, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and generosity during Ramadan.
President Tinubu pledged further pronouncements regarding the fallen soldiers but emphasized that they would receive a befitting burial and national honours.
The nation mourns the loss of these brave soldiers and honors their dedication to duty.
