NLC Protests Shut Down Labour Party HQ, Demands Chairman's Resignation

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest today, blocking the entrance to the Labour Party (LP) headquarters in Abuja. They demanded the immediate removal of National Chairman, Julius Abure, citing allegations of financial impropriety and plans for an unauthorized party convention.

Armed police barred the protesters from entering the building, prompting chants and songs denouncing what they called "Abure's reign of corruption tyranny."

The NLC accuses Abure of organizing an "illegal convention" to cement his grip on power or appoint allies as proxies, sparking internal discord within the party and the broader labor movement.

Organised Labour, a significant LP faction, echoes the call for Abure's resignation to allow for a transparent financial audit, fueled by allegations of mismanagement from the former National Treasurer.

In response, the Abure-led LP National Working Committee accused NLC leader Joe Ajaero of ambition-driven agitation, suggesting he resign from his NLC position before seeking LP leadership.

The protest highlights deep-seated power struggles within the NLC and the LP, underscoring uncertainties in Nigeria's political landscape.
