Delta Governor Urges Monarchs to Aid Justice in Soldiers' Killing Case
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in the state, urging them not to shield suspects implicated in the killing of four military officers and 13 soldiers in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Speaking at the State Traditional Rulers’ Council Secretariat in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the imperative of upholding the rule of law and human decency, stressing that no kingdom should offer refuge to the perpetrators of such a heinous act.
Detailing the events that followed the tragedy, Governor Oborevwori recounted his swift response, which included summoning key stakeholders such as community leaders, representatives from the State House of Assembly, and local government chairmen for a peace accord signing. Additionally, he highlighted his immediate actions upon learning of the incident, including contacting national security authorities, convening security council meetings, and briefing the President and top military officials.
Expressing his resolve to ensure justice prevails, Governor Oborevwori called on traditional rulers to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in identifying and apprehending the culprits. He cautioned against any attempts to shield criminals, stating unequivocally that such actions would not be tolerated.
Moreover, Governor Oborevwori urged traditional rulers to discourage any form of communal unrest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and fostering development in all communities across the state. He condemned the outbreak of violence and called for unity among all Deltans to overcome challenges and promote progress.
In response to the Governor's call for cooperation, Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), affirmed their commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and security. He echoed the Governor's sentiments and advocated for the establishment of a judicial panel of inquiry to thoroughly investigate the root causes of the crisis.
